“As a newcomer I try to order my world in your language. Word by word. Meaning by meaning. Meeting by meeting. Together, humble but determined, let us step into that ‘common language zone’, so that we can start tasting each other’s words and discover that thirst for more vocabulary”

Melih Gençboyacı, a new Dutchman, questions from his experience as human and artist, what the development of your identity in a new language means. Curious of the effect of learning new words, Melih wants to study learning behaviour by organizing public meetings through the performance/installation #5200 words, as opposed to just studying isolated learning behaviour in language courses. This is playful. Free of existing interpretations. Much like 10 children from 10 different countries building a sandcastle together. Welcome in the ‘common language zone’.

A new free space is claimed by new Dutch language speakers, like migrants, expats and re-migrants. In this space they ‘do’ the language as a connection, as protest, as healing, instead of just pounding words into their heads. The ‘doing’ of language can be a collective ritual. And it can be healing, by letting others find out your personal story through a new collected vocabulary. The ‘common language zone’ is a micro suggestion of how we, Dutch and non-Dutch speakers, can relate to each other in the public space with the Dutch language as its tool.
